Shopify CBD payment processing requires a payment route that fits both the store platform and the products being sold. Shopify permits eligible hemp and CBD commerce under its requirements, but Shopify Payments does not support CBD. For U.S. and Canadian merchants, the practical task is to confirm the product scope, business location and compatible third-party provider before changing checkout.

Does Shopify allow CBD sales?
Yes, subject to its applicable requirements and the laws governing the business and sales destinations. Shopify publishes separate requirements for U.S. hemp sellers and Canadian cannabis sellers. Its hemp selling guidance also addresses shipping and other platform conditions. Permission to use the storefront is not blanket approval for every cannabinoid, product claim or destination.
Shopify CBD payments need a third-party provider
Under Shopify’s payment options for hemp sales, merchants need a compatible third-party provider that supports their products. That provider makes its own underwriting decision. A listing as a Shopify payment option does not mean it accepts every CBD business.
Before applying, ask the provider to confirm the supported legal-entity country, product categories, settlement account and checkout integration. WiseAlt’s CBD and wellness payment onboarding support can help structure those conversations. For the underlying account-review questions, see CBD merchant account requirements.
- Give the provider the exact catalogue, not only the label “wellness”.
- Identify the Shopify payment integration it expects you to use and who supports it.
- Confirm settlement currency, payout conditions, refunds, disputes and the complete proposed fee structure.
- Document any excluded products and the process for reviewing future catalogue additions.
Separate U.S. and Canadian onboarding questions
Share company and ownership details, the website, settlement-account country, product ingredients and claims, fulfilment and refund terms, and available processing history. Ask which supporting records the provider needs for the specific application. WiseAlt advises on preparing this information and coordinating the review with independent providers.
A Canadian company selling to U.S. cardholders should have its own entity and settlement setup reviewed. Do not infer that cross-border product shipping is permitted from the availability of a payment integration. The merchant’s country, customer’s country and shipment destination are separate facts.
Check subscription compatibility separately
Shopify maintains a separate list of supported subscription payment gateways. A provider that can take a one-time CBD order may not fit the store’s subscription app. Verify the whole combination before committing to recurring sales.
Ask how the customer authorises renewals, changes a payment method, cancels and receives failed-payment notices. If you are migrating subscriptions, establish whether the existing credentials and contracts can move through an authorised process. Record any customer action required before selecting a switch date.
Plan a Shopify CBD checkout change
Create a short change plan with the provider and store developer. Name the supported payment integration, test environment, refund procedure and person responsible for rollback. Check payment success and failure, order-status updates, confirmation emails, a refund and the transaction record used for reconciliation. Test recurring flows separately if applicable.
If a previous provider has removed processing, retain access to historical transaction, refund and dispute records. A new provider does not automatically take over responsibilities for old transactions. Agree which team will continue to handle those obligations while the new route is assessed.
Questions about Shopify CBD payment processing
Can I use Shopify Payments for CBD?
No. Its hemp payment policy excludes CBD. The storefront and an eligible third-party payment arrangement must be considered separately.
Should I hide CBD products during a review?
No. Give the provider an accurate catalogue and business description. A product mismatch makes the application information unreliable and does not resolve eligibility.
Discuss your store with WiseAlt with the store URL, legal-entity country, product list and subscription requirements. WiseAlt helps assess options and advises on onboarding preparation. Product acceptance, terms and approval are decided by independent providers.
